Week 1: setting up

  1. Sign up for a slot on the “encyclopaedia” sign-up sheet on Canvas (link to Canvas page)
    • Take note of the date: your entry is due 1 week after the class is finished, with the exception of the first available slots on Jan. 16 and 23: those are due on Feb. 4, so you can take advantage of the Library session on Jan. 28.
    • If somebody already has taken the slot you really really wanted, talk with them. Don’t move them out of the slot without agreeing to swap first!
  2. If you haven’t got a Bergbuilds site yet, start thinking about a good name.
    • You may use an alias, but many students use this platform to showcase their work
    • If you have concerns about your online presence, please talk with me, or with the Digital Learning team. We may be able to dispel some misgivings, but we also understand there are valid reasons why some students don’t want to be noticed online, and we will find a different solution.
  3. First reflection: you can write about the contents of Thursday’s class.
    • Use “Week 1” in the title
    • Draft it, and keep safe until next week. (If you already have a site, do the same: we will create a special space on your Domain for this class)
    • If you want feedback early, send it to me and I’ll have a look!
  4. If you haven’t done this yet (was due on Thu 1/16): see if you can figure out hypothes.is, and join group HST267; then comment on the syllabus or add a page note you’ve read the syllabus and understand it.
  5. When you’re all done, go to Canvas and fill out the quiz (true/false)
    • The quiz/survey is not graded, but it will help you to keep on top of the workload, and helps me to keep an overview.
    • This system works on the honors principle from the Academic Integrity Code (AIC): if you declare “True” (i.e. that you have done these steps) but in fact you haven’t, you are violating the code, as “B4: False information”.
    • If one of the steps is giving you trouble, please let me know, or if it is a tech issue, go to the Hive in B06 in Trexler Library. Fill out “False” for the time being, and update your answer when you have everything sorted.
